THE JERUSALEM SYNDROMEHighlight Films' news reports includes a TV report dealing with the release of a new book by Prof. Moshe Amirav: The Jerusalem Syndrome. A 10-20 minute report based on Moshe Amirav's book "The Jerusalem Syndrome". 40 years after Israel "liberated" the Western Wall and east Jerusalem, Israel has not achieved its aims in the holy city, because mayors and politicians alike react irrationally as they are affected by the Jerusalem syndrome", argues Prof. Moshe Amirav.
Amirav was one of the paratroopers who liberated the Western Wall in 1967. He worked 15 years with Jerusalem's mayor Teddy Kollek and was a Likud Knesset member until he was kicked out for talking to the PLO when it was a strict taboo. He was the advisor on Jerusalem's affairs to Prime Minister Ehud Barak during the 2000 Clinton initiative.
In his book he shows how Israel time and again - inspired by religious sentiments, emotions and myths - took decisions which countered its interests in the holy city. He draws the parallel between the psychiatric Jerusalem syndrome and the irrational behavior of Israeli and Palestinian politicians with regard to the city.
In the end of the book, Amirav offers his solution: internationalizing the old city and giving sovereignty to God…Israel the Palestinians, some moderate Arab states and the UN would be the guardians of the few square meters of the old city... The film deals with this view and of others such as the conception?of extremists and peace-seekers of both sides.
