In many of the international productions we handle, our crews film the “real” background for dramatic scenes filmed in a studio somewhere else. Sometimes the filming is rather simple: we film pre-determined “plates” of landscapes or specific locations in Israel.
In other cases, the work process is more elaborate and requires matching the technical specs of the units. Our camera and lens specs, height, movement, and many other variables have to match the first unit specs.
For example, in the production of Transparent (for Amazon Studios), described here by series creator Jill Soloway, we followed the technical instructions of the LA filming crew to the letter.
We always carefully plan and design such shoots. Once the location manager has cleared the locations, we analyze all production aspects so the background we film will be perfect. Often we film in busy, crowded locations, where we have to clear anyone who appears in the frame. The production team has to be quick, alert and in full sync with the camera team.
